I’d like to share a story with you of some of my travels. Over many a year I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to 33 countries. In the process I’ve seen a lot of world history and culture. One of my favorite countries to visit is China. I remember being in Beijing, China and walking among the Chinese and feeling totally at home. I believe that was due to my having spent years among the Chinese in Houston while I was in school.
People to People Ambassador Program
I remember on this particular trip to China I was a part of the People to People Ambassador Program. This allowed several PAs to travel to China and meet with Chinese medical personnel and see their medical facilities. It was then that I came face to face with the stark differences between Chinese (Eastern) medicine and what I was used to in the West.
I have found the more I know about China and its history the better I’m able to share Christianity with them. You have to truly be able to understand their culture and why they believe certain things and with this understanding you can then share pertinent information which will attract them to the God of the Bible.
Christianity in China
After the communists took over China in 1949, the missionaries were forced to leave. Those who had come to believe in Christ were forced to go underground. Many of them formed the underground church which at present is thriving. Also the Three Self Church (which is controlled by the government) is also thriving. It is estimated that out of China 1.4 billion people, almost 20% of them are believers at present. By 2030 China will have the largest Christian church in the world.
Why is the Chinese Church thriving when in other countries it is not? The answer is the Chinese Christians have undergone suffering, trials, tribulations, being put in prison, sent to labor camps, etc. Being a believer is not for the faint hearted in China. There is a cost to it, they know this and understand it before they become a believer.
Chinese Christians understand that God’s grace is costly. We in the West need to learn to understand the same. Too much of the time we have treated it with disdain, walked away from it, said it didn’t matter and were unwilling to pay the price.
We need to learn to take our Christian beliefs more seriously, learn to follow and obey Him daily and begin to have an active prayer life. We need to grow up and begin to eat meat instead of living on baby’s milk. And there is no time like the present to take Him seriously. When was the last time you had a quiet time with Him?
